MASKNE: Tips & Tricks

With facial coverings and masks now being part of the new normal, a lot of my clients have been suffering with mask induced breakouts. Keep reading for all of my tips and tricks on how to treat and prevent maskne.

What is maskne?

Maskne also known as Acne Mechanica is irritation caused by excess friction, heat or pressure on the skin. This in combination with moisture and bacteria trapped in the mask creates clogged pores, irritation and breakouts.

How to prevent it:

A general rule of thumb to prevent maskne is to be gentle with your skin.

  • Cleanse your skin using a gentle cleanser before and after wearing your mask. I highly suggest cleansing as soon as you get home for the day

  • Avoid harsh exfoliants or too much exfoliation. Whilst exfoliation will help to slough away dead skin cells and help to deep clean the pores, the skins barrier can become super irritated whilst wearing a mask

  • Avoid wearing makeup under your mask. As difficult as this may seem, it's not necessary and only causes more bacteria to form and clogged pores

  • Create a barrier between your skin and your mask to minimise rubbing. I suggest Image Skincare Post Treatment Recovery Balm, but anything that is gentle and not too heavy will do the job

  • Wash or replace your mask regularly/daily. Prevent bacteria and dirt forming by keeping your mask clean

How to treat it:

Keep it simple and incorporate key ingredients.

  • Cleanse: Use a gentle cleanser that is pH balanced to avoid stripping the skin. Incorporate an AHA/BHA exfoliating cleanser in the evenings 1-3x per week if skin can tolerate it. I recommend Image Skincare The MAX Stem Cell Facial Cleanser

  • Hyaluronic Acid: Keep the skin hydrated by bringing hyaluronic acid into your routine. Hyaluronic acid based sprays are an easy way to add hydration throughout the day. Serums are also a fantastic way to get that hydration deeper into the skin's layers. I recommend Image Skincare Agless Hyaluronic 6 Filler

  • Enzyme Exfoliation: Enzymes are a gentle yet effective way of exfoliating and can work well for even the most sensitive of skins. One that I have been loving recently is Image Skincare Iluma Intense Brightening Exfoliating Powder

  • Spot Treat: Target those pesky breakouts with salicylic acid. It works deep into the pore to remove build up and clear out all the gunk! Try Image Skincare Clear Cell Clarifying Lotion

  • Don't forget SPF: Although half of your face will be covered, there is still the other half that is exposed to UV! Don't forget to protect your skin with sunscreen. My favourite is Image Skincare Prevention SPF Moisturiser

Stay safe and remember the importance of wearing your mask!
